3 Steps to Take Back Control and Reduce Overwhelm

Overwhelm is the feeling that you have been buried or drowned beneath a huge weight. Most women have a close and personal relationship with overwhelm, and that is not okay!

The more overwhelmed you feel, the more overwhelmed you get about being overwhelmed. It’s such a vicious cycle, but it can be broken.

I teach the women I work with the tools to take back control of their lives so they live in flow instead of overwhelm–they are happier, more peaceful, and yes, more productive!

So here are three steps to help you start being in action and find your center and reducing burnout.

Start Your Day Off Strong

What’s the first thing you do when you wake up? If you’re like so many of us, you reach for your phone. The problem with this is that your phone can take you down a rabbit hole of being overwhelmed.

You may be checking emails, scrolling through social media, and feeling the need to respond to each one immediately–even if it’s just for 15 minutes or so before having breakfast.

The key here? Start every morning off strong by setting boundaries around what you will do before looking at email, social media, or other things on your phone. This way you don’t get bogged down in overwhelm from the jump!

Instead of checking your email and starting your day in the spiral of overwhelm, close your eyes, breathe deeply, and become centered. Three breaths in, three breaths out, and grateful thoughts. Give it a try first thing tomorrow, and make it a habit every day.

Start your day with an intention (be sure to watch the video right below this to see how you can do that!).

Consciously create space between your inner peace and your phone, as well as what you’re worried about that’s waiting for you on that phone.

You may use your phone as an alarm to wake up–a lot of us do! But what if you were to charge your phone in another room overnight? Or even across the room? Use an alarm clock to wake up instead. That’s what I started doing, and it’s made such a difference.

Pay Attention to Your Body

When I’m stressed out, I can feel it. Sometimes in my chest or heart, and I have a hard time trying to focus. When that happens, it’s time to raise awareness about what’s happening. What is causing that strong, visceral reaction?

Become curious. Investigate what in your life is causing you such distress, and ask yourself why you’re making such a big deal about it. Ask yourself questions, and don’t beat yourself up!

Is there a time of day or year? A person? A project you’re working on? The more aware you are of your triggers, the better you’ll become at avoiding them from overwhelming you.

Again, return to your breath. Take a few minutes to close your eyes, breathe deeply, and re-center yourself.

Get off the Hamster Wheel

If you’re like so many crazy busy women, you probably feel like you’re going, going, going, and spinning on a hamster wheel so much of the time.

Many of the women I work with feel behind before they even get out of bed. This is no way to live!

When you’re always moving at that pace, you’re unable to think logically about what actually need to be done. You’re constantly in go mode, and it feels like everything is a priority 10.

This is not the case.

Stress elevates your perception of urgency, but not everything is urgent. In fact, so much of what feels urgent can be put off…or may not even be your responsibility.

We’re programmed to feel like we’re not good enough at our jobs, or dedicated enough, if we don’t answer a message right away. You might feel as if you’re more productive when you treat every message urgently.

What you’re actually doing is teaching people that you’re on call for them, and it comes at such a great cost to your health and happiness.

Yes, there are always exceptions. There are things that are actually urgent and need tending to right away.

But I want you to use your head, be resourceful, and take a break. Ask yourself if a situation is truly as urgent as you’ve built it up to be in your head. The majority of the time, the person on the other end isn’t even going to think about it if you get back to them the next morning!

Be aware of what’s going on in your body. Your stress response is likely creating a feeling of importance that doesn’t match the actual gravity of the situation.

Final Thoughts

Being crazy busy is no way to live. While we all go through phases of being busy, we can’t live in a crazy busy life all of the time.

Think bigger than your current situation, and commit to changing the trajectory of your life. You can take control of burnout and overwhelm. I’m living proof that it can happen.
